Gonna build me a kayak

My friend Mark Ware told me about some wooden kayak kits you can purchase and then build yourself. I was instantly interested in this, and decided to look into it right away. Reviews and proximity to Vancouver quickly led me to Pygmy Boats from Port Townsend Washington.

Pygmy’s website has a lot of information on thier boats, and I went through their catalogue looking into which models might be suitable for us. Initially I thought I could build a kayak for Mercy, and if it turned out okay I could later build one for myself. The basic goal is to develop a sport/activity that Mercy and I can enjoy together, and I know that Mercy loves sea kayaking.

After a few phone calls to Pygmy, I decided that the Tern 14 was a good boat for Mercy. It sounds like the larger boats would be too big for her. However, the Tern 14 can pack something like 80lbs of gear, which makes it a good choice for day trips and overnight trips. The Tern 14 might also be enough boat for myself as well. Later on I guess I’ll find out. I’ll either end up with a second Tern 14, or perhaps the Tern 17 or Coho.

Anyways, I’ve created a new blog category called “Tern 14″ and I’ll try to update this as much as possible with boat building information. Here’s the link to the category. For those more internet savy, here’s the rss feed for building a Pygmy Tern 14.

What is Martin thinking?

Yesterday I watched some of the debate that took place in Vancouver. I can’t believe Martin keeps talking about how he is banning handguns. I happen to think that Martin is fairly intelligent guy, so that tells me that either: I’m missing something here; Martin isn’t as smart as I think; Martin doesn’t have much to talk about; or Martin thinks that the public is relatively dumb. As everyone knows, it is illegal to carry handguns around in Canada. A person either has to keep their gun locked at home, or they can keep it at a firing range. If you want to transport your handgun you need to get a permit. So what the hell is “banning handguns” going to do? I could go on about the failed logic in this, but that would probably make me as dumb as … (I’ll leave it to you to decide).

Website modification

The more I learn about WordPress (the software that generates this blog), the more impressed I am. I think I may convert the whole website to a WordPress blog, except for the photo album. WordPress allows integration with an online photo website called Flikr, but I kind of like the flexibility that Gallery (the software that generates the dryfly photo album) provides.

In the future I hope to have a blog category for online music mixes. So I could have a few more blog categories, each with it’s own rss feed: news, music, photos, etc…

National Daycare Blunder

Well, Scott Reid really put his foot in his mouth, didn’t he? He came across as a pompous jackass, showing a great distrust in Canadians. It sure was another PR blunder. Or was it? Read on…

In fact, I would argue that Reid hit the nail squarely on the head. To say that Harper’s proposal would give money to parents to spend on daycare or other child-rearing programs is absurd. Read the rest of this entry »
