dryfly.ca started as a website for sharing one of my DIY projects, a stitch and glue kayak. Since then I've added several more projects including a skin-on-frame kayak, cedar strip canoe, kayak paddles, canoe paddles, building a spey rod, and an antenna for receiving OTA HDTV. I also occasionally ramble on about politics, technology, bike racing, product reviews and last but not least, our kids.

I just found out about a file hosting web service called Zooomr.
It seems a lot like Flickr (I wonder if they are already getting sick of the comparisons?). They have a promo going now for bloggers that want to integrate their blogs with Zooomr.
I’m hoping to start up a photoblog one of these days, and there’s a good chance I’ll hitting up zooomr for the posts. The photo below is hosted by them, let me know if there are any speed issues with it.

That’s the kind of title you may expect to see in a few years. At least, that is what some people think. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem all that unrealistic.
I was speaking with my neighbour the other day and we got around to talking about Stephen Harper. Joe referred to Harper as “scarey guy.” I guess that’s not that unusual really. Many of my friends would consider that to be a compliment. The basic premise behind this thinking is that Harper is going to do his best to not rock the boat in an attempt to win a majority government. That’s why issues such as gay marriage are not even being talked about. Those sticky social conservative agenda issues are off the table for the time being and it seems to be working. Harper is showing himself to be very shrewd by avoiding all controvercy and improving upon our previous PM’s shortcomings. It’s all adding up to a majority government. Heck, the Conservatives are doing everything that Canadians want: less taxes, no scandals, no stealing, tough on crime, etc. Sounds peachy, doesn’t it?
What happens after the next election if the Conservatives get a majority is less peachy. Issues such as gay marriage will be front and center, and they’ll get rammed through. It’s reasonable to predict that the Conservatives will pull a Republic/GWB, only they’ll get their asses handed to them faster than Bush will (Bush will last 8 years, I doubt Canada will stand for 8 years of Harper). The reason for this will be because it is likely the Conservatives will push hard for changes that majority of Canadians will not like. It’s just so happens that the majority of Canadians are too apathetic about government right now, and that’s how this whole process will get started.
Why Could The Conservatives Do That Would Be So Bad?
I’m not entirely sure just yet. However, these guys are the same people that think the Earth is only 8,000 years old. For crying out loud, I don’t want to trust this country to people that are that far out of touch with reality. If you have ever heard any of the right-wing Conservatives speak at public functions (I’ve seen a few videos on the web), you’ll know what I’m talking about. They’re crazy, and they have agendas. They say shit that is so far out in left field, but has far-reaching consequences socially. To list a few:
ban gay marriage
ban abortions
continue the war on drugs (shut the door on legalization of pot and other drugs)
So if you like lower taxes and think banning gay marriage isn’t such a bad idea, hold on tight because it could be you that causes the mess we’re going to get into.

My second stag was much more of an urban affair. Raj Binji-wo organized the event with his usual precision and thought for details. The night began at a restaurant whose name I cannot remember. It used to be the Urban Well. About 1/2 through the meal Alan remembered that the Urban Well was where I “met” Mercy. “Met” has to be taken fairly liberally here… it was more of “saw.” But that’s another story… The meal was quite good, I had some salmon dish. I’d go back there. If I could remember the name.
Next on the plate was Yuk Yuks. All of the acts were good, with special mention to the MC, who was really funny. The guy was just getting started, and there were a few chuckles in the crowd. You know, people were just settling down into the groove. Except for one guy. Yup, that’s right. Alan couldn’t keep his laughter under 140dB. At first everyone turned around and looked at Al, thinking that he was some asshole that was taking the piss out of the comedian. In fact, Alan was just laughing extremely hard. This got all of his laughing even harder. It was sort of a strange thing really.
The night ended with Raj, Frenchie, Al and myself going to Ginger 51 and seeing/hearing Gene Ferris dj. At first he was playing some thumping jacking house which I don’t really care for. But then he settled down into a good mix with a lot of nice deep house. I didn’t see him spin a record the whole night, it was all cds. The highlight was seeing some older guy dance. He spent most of the night sitting/standing, tapping his toes and stuff. He looked latino: cheasy moustache, white collared shirt, dress pants and shoes. He eventually started dancing with some hot chick. The next thing you know, he’s doing the full splits. He then picks himself upwards by sliding his feet together while shaking/gyrating his shoulders. It like some type of James Brown meets Mr.Salsa. Very cool.

The weekend of June 24 was the first of two stags I’ve had. Darcy Mullin and Craig Holm organized the weekend, which was spent in Revelstoke BC. The main event of the weekend was camping at the Mountain Beats and Blues Festival.
Jason Kubian was the guy that suggested we go to the festival and it turned out to be a good idea. However, Kubian had his ulterior motives… Jason has a strong affinity to Ultimate and it turns out that there was an Ultimate tournament in Revy that weekend. Now, I won’t say that Jason spent more time hanging out with his Ultimate buddies. But he did. But I didn’t say that. Read the rest of this entry »
