Time To Donate

Yup, it’s almost Christmas which means it’s time to open the cheque books and donate. Only this year it’s a bit different… I’m sure most of us have our favourite charities to give to but this month I’m considering an additional one. I’ve never given it any thought before but the events of the last few months have convinced me that it’s pretty important.

The great thing about the additional donation is that 75% of the donation is eligible for an income tax credit. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about donating to your favourite federal political party. Read the rest of this entry »

My Unbearable Lightness of Being

One of my favourite books (by one of my favourite authors) is The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. Unfortunately I think I lent it out to someone and I haven’t seen it for quite some time, hence the title of this blog post. If you’re reading this, and you borrowed my copy of the aforementioned novel, please drop me a message and let me know if you like it and if you plan on returning it. Thanks.

A Proud Father

Over the past couple of weeks, both of my kids have really impressed me. Don’t get me wrong, as a proud father I’m always impressed. Even still, there are a couple of cool things as of late that deserve mentioning.

Grady has always been a nice kid, and definitely is great with his sister. Recently he’s taking it to a new level though. Without any prompting or guidance, Grady has been really encouraging Emma May in their play. He lets her win or do well in games where his age is a huge advantage for him. Even better, he gives her real earnest congratulations and tells her how well she is doing. Not only is it important that Grady does this, but it is fantastic in how he does it. It’s difficult to describe but he does it really, really well.

Emma May of course is growing up in all the normal ways but one thing that makes me extra proud is how she has been controlling her emotions. Emma has always had temper tantrums. I don’t think they have been anything out of the ordinary and certainly nothing crazy. Just typical stuff around the house, and almost always related to emotions and feelings (and not a tool for getting something she wants). Anyways, over the past month she has been able to stop herself in the middle of a tantrum, squeaking out something like “Daddy, I’m not crying anymore” while successfully lowering her voice and fighting back tears. It’s awesome to see Emma May do this, as it shows that she recognizes what is happening and learning to deal with it. Plus, she’s damn cute even with a sour face!

Why Microsoft Is Better Than Apple

From the BBC news: “Mr Carter also announced that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had contributed $40m (£27m) toward the eradication effort, and the British government had pledged a further $15m (£10m).”

The above is a reference to eradication of the Guinea worm. “Guinea worm disease may be eliminated within two years, former US president and anti-disease campaigner Jimmy Carter has said. It would be only the second time in human history, after smallpox, that a disease had been completely wiped out.”

Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Steve Jobs (Apple) have some things in common such as having an extremely large net worth. There are some differences too. From what I’ve read, unlike Gates, Jobs’s name does not appear in any public charity donation lists. Furthermore, Jobs has not spoken publicly about any charities or donations. The general feeling, as far as I can tell, is that Jobs like to keep his money all for himself.
