Star Wars Adapters

Remember in the first Star Wars (#4, A New Hope), when Luke, Han, Ben, et al get stuck in the tractor beam of the Death Star? They find a room and R2D2 plugs into the computer outlet. I was just thinking that it was a damn good thing that R2D2 had the right plug, otherwise the movie would have been pretty short and would have sucked. R2 would have had to scoot around the Death Star looking for a London Drugs so he could buy an Empirical adapter.

That is not so surprising. R2D2 is a rather popular style of astromech droid in the galaxy and is likely fitted with the typical types of ports and plugs used by the majority of the galaxy’s spacecraft and spacecraft accessory manufacturers.

Although I would expect that belonging to the Rebellion’s technical support staff is mainly an exercise in finding the right adaptor to patch the equipment together.

Yeah, but R2D2 was at least 20 years old. In that time I wouldn’t be surprised if the Empire updated to a newer robust plugin standard. Maybe a new plugin that does simulataneous authenticity checking with AES encryption, so that only authorized droids can access important data and functions. It’s this failure to encrypt and secure their data network that will be the Empire’s ultimate doom.

The cylons would never make a mistake like that.

That’s true. What most people don’t know though, is that the Cylons also were fervent adherents to ISO standards, and that for every 1200 Cylons there was one quality assurance manager. True, the plugins never changed and the standard was kept, but at what cost? It’s said that the first thing that young Cylons learn to read is SOP FORM-WPN-001-FT (procedure for calibrating the timing of the red light that bounces back and forth on their led viewers).

Finally, something on this blog worth reading about. Fascinating, simply fascinating.
