Stag 1

The weekend of June 24 was the first of two stags I’ve had. Darcy Mullin and Craig Holm organized the weekend, which was spent in Revelstoke BC. The main event of the weekend was camping at the Mountain Beats and Blues Festival.

Jason Kubian was the guy that suggested we go to the festival and it turned out to be a good idea. However, Kubian had his ulterior motives… Jason has a strong affinity to Ultimate and it turns out that there was an Ultimate tournament in Revy that weekend. Now, I won’t say that Jason spent more time hanging out with his Ultimate buddies. But he did. But I didn’t say that.

The weekend had a bit of rough start because I didn’t have a ride from Vancouver. That meant… drum roll…. Greyhound bus. The bus isn’t known for its speedy transport and I can confirm that. When you take the bus from Vancouver, the first that you do is head in a direction opposite from where you want to go. Two things of note about this trip. One, police only had to board the bus once (in Merritt). Two, the bus managed to be 1/2 hour late eventhough there was no traffic or delays. Once in Kamloops Jason gave me a ride to Revy. The good thing about the trip is that I had time to read the book, “The Tipping Point.” For the trip back to Vancouver I opted to spend $40 more and fly back from Kelowna, which saved me 4 hours of travel. Mullin gave me a ride to Kelowna, bless his soul.

It was pretty cool to do some camping with the guys. Other than myself, Don Seel travelled the furthest to the stag, I think his trip was 8 hours. Tony and Redhead drove motorbikes, which would have been a nice way to travel.

Highlights of the weekend include the Sitar/Yoga session, the Zimbabwean band FESO, free beer, and some dancing to the beats of Sobeit Union at the “afterparty” on Saturday. The downside to the weekend was having a ball and chain attached to my ankle. Now don’t get me wrong, Don and Don (especially Don) spent some time making the ball and chain and I appreciate the effort. It’s just that the damn thing hurt (okay I’m a wimp) and it wasn’t that funny after a while. Oh well, it was good for some laughs and precipitated a few practical jokes.

The funniest moment of the weekend, other than bugging Kubian, happened while we were hanging out at the campsite. John Z had two of his border collies with him and we were sitting around, drinking some pops. A cute girl with an English accent came up to John and with the air of interest about herself, asked John if the dogs were his. Not that John was interested in the girl, but it’s always fun to see a cute girl show interest in a buddy. Anyways, John sheepishly says, “yes.” The girl then comments that one of the dogs just took a shit beside her tent. Not only that, but she stepped in it. Ah, good times…

Revelstoke itself was a lot different from how I remembered it. I thought the town was really nice and there seemed to be a fairly young population there. I wouldn’t mind moving to Revy if I could find work there. It’s reasonably central, being 3.5hrs from Invermere (where my parents are), 2.5hrs to the Okanagan, and 6hrs to Vancouver.
